Kakoinoseki (Secrete Tearoom, Private)
Visitors can view our private tearoom by appointment only (special temple tours are available for groups of more than 10 people). There was a time when tea practice was forbidden for Zen practitioners in Myoshinji since it was considered as a hindrance to Zen training. (Zen training was believed to be the most significant Zen principle at Myoshin-ji.) However, it is said that Priest Senzan the 6th had so much passion for tea that he built this tearoom in secret. It is designed so competently that people can hardly ever tell it is a tearoom when they look at it from outside.
